What is Occupational Therapy ?
An occupational therapist helps people overcome challenges completing everyday tasks or activities – what we call ‘occupations’. Occupations refer to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families and within communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life.
Daily life is made up of many activities (or occupations). The focus of therapy could be on self-care, such as getting dressed, eating a meal or using the toilet. It could be around being productive – going to nursery, school or training. Or it could simply be about improving their ability to play with friends, play sports or take part in hobbies.
Who might benefit from Occupational Therapy ?
Any child who has difficulties significant enough to hinder their performance in an area of daily living, such as self-care, school or play.
Although a diagnosis alone is not always an indicator of the need for occupational therapy, we often see children with the following diagnoses at our cabinet:
- Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD or dyspraxia)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (and genetic syndromes which feature ASD symptoms e.g. Fragile X)
- Attention Deficit (with Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADHD & ADD)
- Down’s Syndrome
- Dysgraphia
- Global Developmental Delay
- Sensory Processing and Sensory Integration Difficulties
