Why your child may need our services.

Reasons you might refer your child for occupational therapy
An occupational therapist helps people overcome challenges completing everyday tasks or activities – what we call ‘occupations’. Occupations refer to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families and within communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life.
Daily life is made up of many activities (or occupations). The focus of therapy could be on self-care, such as getting dressed, eating a meal or using the toilet. It could be around being productive – going to nursery, school or training. Or it could simply be about improving their ability to play with friends, play sports or take part in hobbies.
We have helped children with the following difficulties:
How do I get an assessment for my child?
Please talk to your child’s doctor if you think your child needs an assessment.
Please complete the online form available on this website to be placed on a waiting list. Alternatively, you can call the office at Gland or Coppet and leave your details.
There is a high demand for occupational therapy services, and you may therefore have to wait several months before we are able to begin the assessment process.
What’s involved in the assessment?
Before assessment we will ask you to complete a questionnaire (LINK) and forward any other professional reports to help the therapist plan the assessment. A therapist will contact you to book a time and date for assessment.
A general functional Occupational Therapy assessment takes 1-2 hours over 1-2 sessions, depending on the age and concentration of the child. The assessment will usually take place at our cabinet in Coppet or Gland. Parents should stay with their child during assessment, but it is preferable not to bring siblings. The assessment will include an interview with a parent or caregiver.
Please make sure that your child wears comfortable clothing and has a pair of trainers/sneakers, as the assessment will include some physical activities.
If a sensory profile is required, this will be based on interview and observations. A questionnaire is given to the parents, as well as one for the child’s teacher.
Reports
The results of the assessment will be scored and analysed. A full written report is provided, usually within 2-3 working weeks of the final appointment. This is shared with the prescribing doctor and can also be sent to anyone else whom you specify. You are free to share your report with whomever you wish. The report may also include strategies that your child’s teacher may find useful in the classroom setting.
You will then be invited to discuss the report and its recommendations. This meeting takes place without the child and is a chance for you to ask questions, decide whether to begin therapy and to define and prioritise goals.
Occupational Therapy treatment
Your child’s occupational therapy treatment goals will be discussed with you and agreed before embarking on treatment. Therapy aims to be fun, child-centred and related to the agreed treatment goals.
Therapy sessions are usually weekly (sometimes twice a week), at an agreed time.
Individual therapy sessions last 50 minutes with 5 minutes for feedback to parents. Please respect the start and finish times, as we need to get ready for our next appointment. If you wish for longer for feedback and discussion, please consult your therapist who might suggest that you observe a part of the session or book a separate appointment for a discussion.
Please note, 24 hours’ notice is required for cancellations (except in cases of sudden illness), otherwise sessions will be billed directly to the parents as cancellations are not covered by swiss health insurances.
Health insurance
Please note that occupational therapy is normally reimbursed by basic swiss health insurance, only upon receipt of a prescription signed by a medical doctor. Please consult your child’s pediatrician or other medical doctor to explain your concerns and request a prescription. The prescription must predate the assessment, but it is valid for a maximum of two months. We recommend that you wait until you have a date for the assessment before asking your doctor for a prescription.
Occupational therapy is billed at a tariff agreed with the Red Cross Switzerland and santésuisse. Time spent in preparation, related administrative tasks, reports and meetings will also be billed.
All our bills are sent via the Caisse des Médecins. We will need your child’s full insurance number and a signed prescription. Only Swiss health or social insurance companies will be billed directly via this system. For those with other insurance coverage, such as international insurance, parents will be billed and will need to seek reimbursement themselves. Please check your insurance cover before embarking on an assessment or therapy.
